Crochet a cafe jar cosy

Following are instructions for how to crochet your own simple jar cosy.

Simple jar cosy

Uses 8 ply yarn or wool, with a 5mm crochet hook.

(Note that the size of the finished cosy will depend on the yarn weight and size of crochet hook used. To make a bigger or smaller cosy, simply adjust the yarn weight, hook size, or number of stitches in the base.)

THE BASE

Centre ring: Chain 5 stitches. Slip stitch into first chain to form a small circle.

R1: Chain 2 (counts as 1st treble crochet). Make 7 double crochet into centre of the circle.  Join with slip stitch to the top of chain 2. (You should now have 8 stitches in this round.)

R2: Chain 2 (counts as first treble crochet). Treble crochet into top of chain 2 from previous round. Make 2 treble crochet into each subsequent stitch. Slip stitch to the top of chain 2. (You should have a total of 16 stitches in this round.)

R3: Repeat round 3 (for a total of 32 stitches).

THE SIDES

This next row continues on from the base, and works upward to form the sides of the cosy.

R4: Continuing up from the base, chain 2 (counts as first treble crochet). Treble crochet into the back of each stitch. Join with a slip stitch to top of chain 2. (32 stitches) NOTE: working into the back of each stitch in this round isn’t compulsory, but will make a neater base, with a decorative line.

R5: Chain 2 (counts as first treble crochet). Treble crochet into each stitch. Join with a slip stitch to top of chain 2 (32 stitches).

Subsequent rows: Repeat row 5 till desired height is reached. (32 stitches)

Final row: Chain 1, then single crochet into each stitch to form a neat top row. Join with a slip stitch to top of chain 1. Cast off and thread any stray ends into the cosy to hide them.
